"If you knew you would be in the battle for your life
tomorrow, how would you train today?"

Helo Famil Training

The news article stated that this was the dogs first attempt at boarding a helo (I doubt it). Knowing the dedication of handlers, some ground work would have been done prior (and we praise that).
The video to the right covers a 'basic' foundation that needs to be laid in order to make the final transition to boarding a Helo, less stressful for the dog. Military or CIVPOL is no different. It's the 'foundation' work that needs to be done correctly, that will set the team up for success.

Helo Famil (like gun fire famil)

Starts at a distance (outside the environment) then as the dog progresses, moving closer. Yes it takes time and to rush this process will pressure the dog and cause some stress. Just like humans K9s have learning thresholds and learning speeds, push too quickly, too early, and it will reveal it's draw backs (see pictures above). Walk the dog around active airfields (at distances) playing ball, doing work in or around that environment will all assist in familiarising the dog to the sounds, wind gusts etc. Just take easy, one step at a time.
