Next On Alpha Dogs - E CollarNext Kenny meets with Doug Roller, a trainer that has worked with VLK West. Although he is an outstanding trainer, he also uses an E-collar to train his dogs. This device has been noted to be very controversial and Kenny is left with the decision whether this technique will mix well with VLK’s K9 philosophy. These devices send a vibration or electric stimulus to a dog’s neck through the dog’s collar. These signals can be set either by an electric fence sensor in the ground or by a remote control used by a handler. These came into use in the 1960s and were used to ward off bad behavior. The intensity setting could be compared to a lightning strike, but has since changed and made more effective for trainers to use today. They are now seen as effective in teaching good behavior and comparable to a tug on a leash. The effectiveness and safety of these e-collars has brought up heated debates since the inception of the device to the public. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), recommends the use of these devices during search and rescue missions. The main concern is proper education is needed on behalf of the handler before this device is used in a practical setting. Tactical K9 is a company that specializes in the education of proper handling of the collar and is currently working alongside VLK to teach the proper use for their training courses. They are located in Los Angeles, California and offer their services to polices officers and military dog handlers across the country. Make sure not to miss Alpha Dogs: Growing Pains Friday at 9P and see if Tom is able to provide dogs for VLK West and if Doug can show Kenny that the E-collar can be an effective training device for their K9 philosophy. |

AUSTRALIAN FIRST
Location: TBC (currently scoping)
Doug Roller is a 30 year L.A.P.D veteran, spending 17 years as Sergeant and the last 15 years as the Chief K9 Trainer of the L.A.P.D K9 unit. He has over 1,500 arrests, accumulated through service in the notorious West Hollywood 'Rampart' Division in LA county; also serving in the C.R.A.S.H. Gang Unit. He has numerous K9 training achievements and career miles stones that few can accumulate in a lifetime.
His units arrest/find ratio is one of the most consistent in the country. His K9 apprehensions and numerous articles he writes for the Police K9 Magazine and well traveled seminar list, is a testament to the wealth of knowledge he has to offer. Doug is truly a 'well experienced' K9 operator that has something to share with us. His modest approach, relaxed delivery and field tested experience make him a wise choice of presenters for such a little understood topic (E-Collar work).
" LAPD has used E-Collar for approximately 25 years, and we have had our share of ups and downs. At the same time, however, we have honed and shaped our use of this tool, and it has dramatically enhanced our tactical abilities as well as
economised our training. "
Doug owns and operates 'Tactical K9' and is coming to Australia to teach his renowned 4 day E-collar course. Doug is now teaching his course to branches of the US Military. His class is also now part of each Handlers Course at Von Liche kennels, USA.
Program Managers from Lacklands Military Working Dog Program have observed his workshops and are in discussions to implement his E-collar Workshop for their Trainers. The E-collar has been frowned upon by some members of the MWD Program but they are now considering it with proper instruction.
Doug Roller was part of a very select group of instructors that were asked to instruct on training techniques (E-collar use) for the Military Working Dogs during Lackland's Military Working Dog Conference in late May of this year. He also was asked to judge events during their K9 Working Dog Trials.
The point to note here, is that for the US Military to reach outside of it's ranks, is indicative of how valuable this training is. This is cutting edge training being adopted by the Military and you now have the chance to learn from the same instructor.
